Malpractices in the CodeChef April 2010 Challenge

Posted by basil on April 26th, 2010 Filed in Announcement View Comments

As a result of certain malpractices that took place during the April Contest we are banning 3 of our top 20 Indian winners for the next challenge. They will also not be receiving prize money for the April Challenge.

In keeping with the spirit of CodeChef and since we do not want to spread a negative vibe among the contestants we will not publicly reveal the names of the people disqualified from the contest.

However, please bear in mind that we take cheating very seriously and will do everything we can to promote fair and healthy competition.

Cheating in future contests will result in the permanent banning of the faulty party.

We are optimistic and hope that something like this will NOT happen again. :)

Regards,
Team CodeChef

oh come – on give the names , all of us want to hear, it's not demeaning in any way , if you give free pass, all of us will cheat, it just establishes that those 3 were dumb enough to get caught. views mentioned above are not personal, look around , they are just how we as human behave.

The cheaters have been banned from the next contest and do not receive prize money for the past contest either. We do not consider that a free pass.Cheating just because you can, would make you lose out on the true spirit of CodeChef and this contest. Its purpose is to learn and not win, which is something you would not accomplish.

Yes, we cannot control all types of cheating. And we assumed that we do not really have to be bothered about it. We are here to provide a platform to learn. That is what we shall like to indulge ourselves in. Finding all kinds of unfair practices is not on our agenda. We can do only as much as we can. And then it is in your hands how you all use it. We believe that trust is the best way to encourage fairness. We trust the community and the solutions are open to all to view after the contest. In this particular case a very obvious and glaring case of misconduct was brought to our notice by one of you guys. We investigated and the people involved accepted what they did. We understand that mistakes may happen but as long as we realize our mistakes and learn from it, we all have a chance to redeem. Hence we do not think that it is necessary to reveal the identity or mention exactly what had happened. Because that is simply not the agenda. We are here to encourage all to come and participate in the contests fairly and learn from it. The goal here is learning and this can never be over-emphasised. Winning is just a motivation!
