January Cook-Off 2021 | A Contest To Remember

2 min read

The January Cook-Off has ended, and it was quite a contest. An unexpected number of participants, the highest we’ve ever had on CodeChef, caught us unaware and caused glitches for some participants. While we work to improve that, here’s a recap of the otherwise amazing competition.

A Powerful Problem Set!

The players had their work cut out for them, as all three Divisions were given six problems to solve. Problem Mex Subsequence was the most popular in Division One as it garnered over 120 accurate submissions by the end of the contest.  Another problem that was showered with attention in Division One was Not Too Colourful. A solid 85 players cracked the code but the accuracy rate was only 28.21 percent. Talking tough problems for the Division, Partition Ways and Equal Gifts were definitely the coders’ worst nightmare. Partition Ways had only 7 successful submissions, while Equal Gifts accumulated merely 6 green ticks.

For Division Two, the problems that played crowd-favorite were Prime Tuples and Maximize Islands. While Prime Tuples had the more successful submissions at 1800+, Maximize Islands had the higher accuracy rate at 32.21 percent. Problem Prefix And seemed to have all the players in a fix as we saw only 6 correct answers. Equal Gifts was the villain once again as only 3 Division Two players walked home with a green tick.

Moving on, the problem that everyone enjoyed solving in Division Three was Password. While 4100+ players solved the problem the accuracy rate was rather low at 23.72 percent. Another problem that the players seemed to favor was Distinct Pair Sums, as the problem drew in 4000+ accurate answers. The boons of Division One turned out to be the bane of Division Three as problems Mex Subsequence and Not Too Colourful got only 15 and 8 successful submissions respectively. However, we know our budding programmers have a lot more to offer, and we are patiently waiting for the next contest to see them grow.

Über Competitive Ranklists

With three ranklists the contest was privy to some extraordinary competition. Unsurprisingly enough Gennady took home the crown in Division One. The pro solved all the given problems and has upped his rating by 4049 points. Gennady was followed by 6-star Japanese player maroonrk and although the player gained 154 points in the contest, it wasn’t quite enough for him to switch stars. The third place was claimed by ecnerwala . Credit to his splendid performance ecnerwala was able to jump stars from 5 to 6. 7-star coders ksun48 and endagorian gave us quite the display of skills as they clinched positions 4 and 5 respectively.

Three Indian coders made it to the top 25 this time as anshugarg12, hate_walkin, and kshitij_789 secured places 14 and 16, and 18. Kudos to them!

Coming to Division Two, United States contestant neal claimed first place. The player solved all given problems to switch stars from 4 to 5. The coder was followed by North-Korean rns_cus. Mirroring neal, rns_cus was able to utilize this contest to jump stars from 4 to 5. Player noimi gave a stunning performance to clinch the third position. The Japanese participant was able to use this contest to collect 203 points and jump stars from 3 to 4. Fourth and fifth places were claimed by rfpermen, and Russian coder meatrow, both of whom gave dazzling displays of skills and jumped stars from 3 to 4.

Indian players were fairly prominent in the Division Two ranklist as coders l_lawliet2001, kesh4281, and dristiron03 clinched places 7 through 9.

In Division Three it was Egyptian player isaacmoris who took home the title and in doing so jumped stars from 1 to 3. He was followed by participant ymatsux. ymatsux mirrored isaacmoris and used this contest to switch stars from 1 to 3. Player jimm89 was the one who claimed third place. The coder gained 220 points in the competition and is now a 3-star player. The fourth position was secured by nekorolly. The coder started the contest as a 2-star player and ended it as a 3-star one. nekorolly was followed by rns_sjh who was also able to utilize this contest to make it as a 3-star player.

Indian coders didn’t disappoint in Division Three as players jeevanjyot and  snob1209, and tamajitbuba made it to the top 15. All the players gave impressive performances to clinch positions 6, 11, and 13.
Well, folks, that’s it for today. It’s been an absolutely epic January Cook-Off and we look forward to more such competitions in the future. Until next time, this is CodeChef co-respondent Riddhi Acharya hoping for an equally happening January LunchTime and January Starters.
